How to Create and Use Sections in Microsoft Forms Easily 2026

By Impran M N

A long questionnaire crammed onto a single page overwhelms respondents and drives up abandonment rates. Microsoft Forms' Section feature lets you divide a survey into distinct, thematic pages, keeping each screen focused and easier to complete.

01Find your breakpoint

Scroll to the exact spot in your question list where you want to split the layout into a new page.

02Open the extended options

Click Add New, then tap the drop-down arrow next to the standard field options to reveal the extended menu.

03Insert a Section

Select the Section option from the list to inject a new page break at that point.

04Title and describe the section

Click into the new section header to give it a distinct title, and use the sub-description line for any special instructions.

05Build questions inside the section

Use the Add New button inside the section block to build targeted questions for that specific page, then preview to click through the pagination.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I move an entire section, questions and all, at once?

Yes, the section ellipsis menu lets you duplicate or move the whole group block up or down within your form.

Does adding sections change how responses are exported?

Sections organize the respondent experience into pages, but exported data is still structured by individual question, not by page.

How many sections can a form have?

You can add as many section breaks as needed to organize a long questionnaire into manageable pages.

Will each section show a progress indicator to respondents?

Forms' multi-page layout guides respondents through each section sequentially as they complete the survey.
